Helping professionals have conversations that create lasting change.
I'm Stephen Scott, a trainer, curriculum developer, and public health consultant with more than 15 years of experience helping professionals build the skills they need to have better conversations and provide better services.
Motivational Interviewing
Much of my career has focused on Motivational Interviewing (MI), particularly in public health and healthcare settings. I've trained counselors, social workers, healthcare professionals, and other helping professionals in MI, while also developing curricula and training programs that help people move from understanding the ideas behind MI to actually using them.
HIV, HCV, and STI Test Counseling
For over 15 years I've worked specifically with HIV, HCV, and STI test counselors, helping them develop the communication and counseling skills they need to support clients through conversations that can be personal, difficult, and sometimes life-changing. I've trained new and experienced counselors, developed training programs for testing and counseling professionals, and provided Motivational Interviewing training to public health and healthcare professionals.
Helping People Learn by Doing
What I enjoy most about training is taking something that can seem complicated and making it feel clear, practical, and doable. I believe people learn best when they have the opportunity to practice, try out new things, get useful feedback, and try again. That's why my trainings are designed to be interactive and grounded in the situations people encounter in their actual work.
My work extends beyond MI. I'm also an experienced curriculum developer and instructional designer, with a background in adult learning, professional development, and public health. I work with organizations to develop training, improve existing programs, and turn their knowledge and expertise into learning experiences that people can actually use.
My Training Philosophy
I try to bring the same principles to training that I bring to Motivational Interviewing: curiosity, collaboration, respect, and a genuine belief in people's ability to learn and grow.
I'm not interested in training that people sit through, complete a survey about, and forget the next day.
I want people to leave with something they can use the next day.
Through Stephen Scott Consulting, I work with public health organizations, community-based organizations, healthcare and behavioral health teams, and other professionals who want to strengthen their skills and the work they do.
If that sounds like the kind of training or consulting you're looking for, let’s talk!
